What is the biggest contribution that you have made to your community? by Joshua - January 2024 Scholarship Essay
In my pursuit of academic and personal growth at Cornell University, where I am majoring in Applied Economics and Management, the most significant contribution I have made to my community is the co-founding and management of Help Homeless Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting homeless communities. This endeavor, rooted in compassion and a commitment to social responsibility, represents my most substantial effort to effect positive change and provide tangible support to one of the most vulnerable groups in society.
Help Homeless Inc. was born out of a realization of the growing homelessness crisis and a deep desire to make a difference. As co-founder and CFO, I played a pivotal role in shaping the organization’s strategy, managing its finances, and orchestrating various initiatives aimed at providing aid and raising awareness. Our approach was multifaceted, focusing not only on immediate relief but also on long-term solutions and advocacy.
One of our key initiatives was partnering with local shelters to provide essential resources such as food, clothing, and toiletries. We organized fundraising events, donation drives, and collaborated with businesses for sponsorships and support. These efforts directly impacted the lives of hundreds of individuals by providing them with basic necessities and a sense of dignity during challenging times.
Another significant aspect of our work was the organization of financial literacy classes in collaboration with JPMorgan Chase. These classes were designed to empower individuals living in shelters with essential financial skills, thereby contributing to their journey towards financial independence and stability.
Furthermore, Help Homeless Inc. actively engaged in community awareness programs. We organized events in schools and community centers to educate people about homelessness, dispelling myths and fostering a culture of empathy and support. These programs not only brought the community together but also inspired others to take action, thereby amplifying our impact.
The creation and growth of Help Homeless Inc. have been my most substantial contributions to the community. This experience has been profoundly fulfilling, not just in the sense of the immediate impact we made but also in the lasting change we initiated. Leading this organization has taught me invaluable lessons in leadership, empathy, resilience, and the power of collective action.
In conclusion, through Help Homeless Inc., I have been able to contribute significantly to my community by providing support to homeless individuals, raising awareness, and advocating for long-term solutions to homelessness. This endeavor aligns with my academic pursuits at Cornell University, where I am learning to integrate ethical and sustainable practices into business and economics. The experiences and skills I have gained through this work have profoundly shaped my perspective and will continue to influence my future career and community engagements. My contribution through Help Homeless Inc. reflects my commitment to making a meaningful difference in the world, one community at a time.
