Improving My Legal Writing Proficiency by Joshua - August 2022 Scholarship Essay

As a law student, I've spent the previous year studying how to write in a legal manner. Learning to write in such a manner is incredibly important for any practicing attorney, so it is therefore crucial that I develop my skills as much as possible before graduating. Yet, I struggled with becoming proficient in legal writing, though I did make progress when comparing my drafts from the start and end of the year. However, I previously allowed my busy schedule to distract me from my need for tutoring. Therefore, my academic goal for the upcoming year is to prioritize the development of level of legal writing proficiency.

In an effort to be proactive, I have enrolled myself in an elective course focused on providing extra support for law students who desire further practice in the subject. Accordingly, I've ordered the require course materials in addition to the optional course materials with hundreds of legal writing exercises. Additionally, I have spoken with the director of my law school's tutoring service regarding the possibility of scheduling weekly tutoring sessions with an upperclassman law student who has previously displayed a mastery level ability. I intend on using my coursework and supplemental writing exercises to assist the tutor in highlight areas where I could use further improvement.
