What is your 10 year career plan? by Joshua - March 2020 Scholarship Essay
In ten years from now, I will be a director in IT management. This is an aggressive goal, but I believe I have a path forward. First, there are few key milestones that I need to achieve in order to reach this goal. In the fall, I plan to attend the University of Akron and major in Business Management with a minor in Information Technology. As I have already taken some business courses through dual high school and community college credits, I will further build out my curriculum for the next four years to achieve my bachelor's degree by the Spring of 2024. To gain exposure to a business workforce, I intend to gain internship experience in various fields of management, finance, and computer technology. I have already shadowed several diversified businesses this past year. For instance, I shadowed an IT manager at Visa in the fall and from that experience was encouraged to apply for a summer co-op. I will apply for that position next year.
In addition, I plan to join my college's business fraternity and other professional clubs to gain mentors in my field. In my final year of school, I will send out resumes to secure a job after graduation. With hard work, real world experience, and solid networking, I hope to gain my first role in IT, and then work towards a promotion over the following few years to earn a director in IT position in ten years. My strong leadership skills and exceptional business acumen will help pave the way to my career goal. I am confident that I will be able to achieve success through my committed leadership and strong work ethic.
A scholarship would be extremely helpful financially. My father was injured on duty as a police officer for the Parma Police Department (in Ohio) and had to retire early with a permanent disability. Our family finances are limited due to this situation as well as additional expenses for my sister who is currently enrolled in college. Thank you for this opportunity to apply to your scholarship. I truly appreciate it.
