Continued Learning: A Potential Elementary Lesson Plan by Joshua - March 2018 Scholarship Essay
I would teach the second-grade student about the significance of continued learning by turning my lecture into a fun activity. I see continued learning as something that not only equips someone with the right tools in finding a career but also keeps that person’s brain actively thinking, making sure that they are hungry for more knowledge. Thus, I need to convert this philosophy into information that not only grabs the attention of a second-grade student but also keeps it because of being appealing and fun for the student.
At such a young age, a second-grade student is impressionable and excitable; they are much more willing to hear about and discuss education than the average adolescent or college student. One thing I can try is to turn the lesson of continued learning into a game where the student gains symbolic representations, such as “career cards:, of information after activities such as attending short mini-lectures for education and performing small experiments labeled as “research projects”. A person at the age of a second-grade student is likely to be enthusiastic about collecting items, so this may appeal to them. After a certain period of time, the student could earn certain prizes by having enough career cards for each prize. As a result, the student may learn that participating in continued learning will pay off greatly in the future. If the student take this mindset into future years of education, the student will have an active brain that continually seeks new information and consequently reveal this new benefit to them. Overall, I would try to take an in-depth and hands-on approach in teaching a second grade student about continued learning.
