Teach What You Love by Joshua - October 2016 Scholarship Essay

Usually one loves (or comes to love) what one's strong suits are, and that applies to me. The first subject I think of is English when I think of picking an academic class to teach. I would choose it without a doubt. It is a subject I am generally stronger in, I have a passion for it, and I feel I could teach it more effectively than another class such as science or history.

Ever since I was little, I read a lot and appreciated the many worlds books and stories take people to. I still continue to read a lot today and have always done better overall in English than any other academic subject. I find it popping up in other classes and have no trouble applying it to those other subjects like Chemistry or even Calculus sometimes. Even with my skill in reading and writing, there are other reasons for wanting to teach a specific class besides being good at it.

Being skilled in a field or discipline only makes understanding it and learning (or teaching) it easier. I love reading and writing to this day, and I would enjoy sharing that confidant and optimistic feeling with others. I feel my passion for English would help make a unique and positive atmosphere for students. In such a class I could, as a teacher, contribute the most and positively impact students, meeting and beating the standards I would set for myself if I taught any subject..

My love and knack for reading and writing combine to make English one of the best subjects I could teach if I reversed roles. If I were an academic teacher I would want to be very successful at truly teaching my students and giving them something to use in the future. This does usually relate back to one's strengths and weaknesses and what he or she enjoys doing. English is the subject I would be best fitted for teaching.

My enjoyment with and natural aptitude for English make it my number one choice for choosing as a subject I would teach if I were a teacher. I want to be successful at anything I do, and if I taught a class and could pick the subject, it would be one I know I could take that extra mile. If I reversed roles and was the teacher I would happily and eagerly teach English.
