Unraveling The Motivation Behind The Academic Drive by Josh - April 2024 Scholarship Essay

What is the definition of motivation? When growing up, whether it was on the baseball field or in the classroom, people were constantly asking me why I do the things I do. After years of reflection, I've determined that the definition of motivation is the reason why one person does said actions. When researched, I have concluded that the Oxford Dictionary has provided a similar definition. Motivation is the reason or reasons one has for acting or behaving in a particular way. Whether it's being a doctor to help find the cure to cancer or going to college to become the first ever family member to reach that level of education, one's motivation is the reason why one pursues a certain path. Throughout my life, I have been influenced by an abundant amount of people. Whether it was baseball coaches or past teachers, they have always pushed me to give everything that I have. One thing that is common between all of my mentors is how they always told me that academics always come first and that's what's going to matter in the future.
As I stated above, I have been heavily influenced by mentors and teachers who have always instructed me to strive to give my very best. Throughout life, I have always been told to give my very best at whatever I do. By doing this, you'll always be satisfied, no matter the result. Being instructed on this at a very young age has allowed me to grow and bring this lesson to my academic life. By bringing this lesson to my academic life, it has allowed me to accomplish goals that I believed were unreachable. Whether it was getting a good score on the ACT or receiving an academic award it has shown me that with enough focus and hard work, you can truly achieve many things in life. Although mentors and teachers have had a substantial influence on my life, my parents have influenced it the most. Since day one, my parents have always been there to cheer me on. Whether it was cheering me on at the baseball diamond, or it was praising my recent success in school they were always there to support me. Even when things didn't go my way, my parents were always there to pick me back up and push me in the right direction. Furthermore, they have sacrificed so much for me to achieve not only my academic but also my athletic aspirations. Having these prominent influences in my life is part of the reason why I'm motivated to achieve my academic and personal goals. You see, whether it was my baseball coaches or parents, they always believed that I could achieve great things. Even when I failed and gave up, they were always there to pick me back up and show me that failing is part of the journey and by learning by mistakes is how you grow. By achieving my academic and personal goals, it is a way of saying thank you to all those who have influenced my life.
Another reason why I push myself to achieve my academic goals is because of my college and future career goals. Everyone once in their life has thought about what they want to do when they grow up. Whether it was being a neurosurgeon or being a firefighter, people have always dreamed of the perfect career for them. Although I'm not entirely sure what career path I want to follow, I have acquired an interest in computers. The idea of how technology works has always been a fascinating topic to me. By learning how technology is created and coded, I have piqued an interest in pursuing a career as a computer programmer. Being a computer programmer, allows me to learn how to develop and encode the technology that we use in everyday life. Being interested in this career requires me to go to college and receive a major in Computer science. Although it may seem weird, being fascinated by this possible future career has allowed me to develop my own academic goals. Following the newly acquired interest in this career, I have constructed the goal of learning new skills and subjects. In today's world, someone can gather research information with just a few clicks of a mouse. Because of this, it has shown me that for one to grow in knowledge, one must not be afraid to explore and learn new skills and subjects. This has allowed me to expand my knowledge on a variety of different subjects.
In conclusion, my why has been the reason why I strive to achieve great things. Whether it's being the CEO of my own company or being the top computer programmer in the world, that lesson that all my parents and mentors taught me all those years ago is going to be a major reason why I'm going to achieve great things one day. By doing this I hope to leave a lasting impact on my community. I believe Jacki Robinson says it best "A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives."
