My Education Career and Life Goals by Josh - February 2024 Scholarship Essay
Ever since early on in my education life, I had been diagnosed with two learning differences that ended up affecting my life, one part being an active imagination. As time passed, I would start to play around in my mind, like a kid in a sandbox. With my imagination as both my hands and limit, I crafted worlds, characters, and items to play with to pass the time rather than interacting with others. It continued throughout middle and high school, even when I started opening up and interacting with others more. Eventually, as time passed, the worlds became more defined and connected. No longer with each being their separate world, for with each new idea, a bridge is occasionally formed to link one world with another.
Eventually, high school came, and my sandbox exploded from isolated worlds into its own universe, with various new worlds and bridges being crafted throughout my four years of high school. Part of this came from the question we were eventually asked sometime in our early education years, “What do you want to do for a living?” Like most children and soon-to-be adults, I had many ideas of what kind of job I wanted to do for the rest of my life. Eventually, I decided to share the universe that I have poured so many years and effort into, and I wanted it to be enjoyable. While most of the earliest crafts may not see the light of day, they are stored away as artifacts in my museum. A reminder of where and how it all started. However, this doesn’t mean they can’t be adjusted with my newly acquired knowledge and skills from roaming the sandbox for around a decade. And so, the sandbox universe continues to grow as a new craft is formed, and old is changed, constantly progressing forwards, never backward.
This brings me to where I am now. Originally planning on a degree in game design, I am currently working on an English degree to bypass the initial start of most new hires in the game industry. This is because I had learned that the outcome of joining a gaming company through my previously intended pathway wouldn’t directly lead to the results I desire. With this knowledge, I found that sidetracking with a degree in English would get me into the spot I wanted, where I would write the game storylines.
Although regardless of which career path I choose, getting into college requires good grades and lots of money. This is where working a job and scholarship applications come into play by allowing you to obtain money to attend college, where, unlike student loans, you won’t have to pay back. I have been working at my first job for almost two years, which will be great for my resume when applying. That, paired with the stories I will work on while in college, will help build a strong profile for myself and my resume when graduating and applying for my dream job. As for scholarships, applying to several will help increase my chances of getting scholarship money to use for college; more scholarships obtained means more money towards getting into my desired college and, thus, my desired job.
