Social Media: A Platform For the Data You Need by Josh - March 2022 Scholarship Essay

Social media is a dominating force that has taken over hours of nearly every teenager’s life. Although there can be negative side effects and time-wasters that come along with social media usage, there are many benefits from the wide range of information that social media can provide. In this short essay, I hope to give evidence and examples of how social media has been a benefit to not only my life, but also the lives of many other users.
One of the most important aspects of social media is that the input of information is quite astounding. Whether it is data about the current weather outside, the news from the Middle East, or simply a playful meme, the amount of accessible information that is provided is truly remarkable. In addition, the personalization that many social media websites allow creates a platform from which different interests and hobbies can be established. For example, rather than seeing inappropriate content or humor that is unhealthy, my social media accounts give me a “for you” page in which are places posts that relate to the posts that I have previously liked. This allows for a personal experience in which only the wanted information is provided. Social media also gives information on the world. Although I do not use it as my primary source, social media is my first line of communication to world events. I often hear about major world events first through social media, and then I turn to other more reliable sources to build a perspective on the topic.
In the end, social media is an amazing source for data collection and information gathering. By using the platforms provided, I am able to go to one app, one website, and have access to all types of information that interest me and that keep me informed on the current events in our world. For these reasons, I believe that social media is a huge benefit to the learning processes of young adults and students alike all around the globe.
