Learn Busten by Josh - October 2016 Scholarship Essay
I remember as a kid I loved watching Mythbusters. The real question is who didn’t like to watch Mythbusters. Mythbusters brought curiosity and learning together, this mix made the show interesting and enjoyable. If the roles were switched I would teach science where you could learn, enjoy and apply the principles taught.
This method of teaching will help the students think critically. In order to create these experiments, you have to think through how you can create the circumstances to prove the myths. With this way, there is not the possibility where you can google the answer. The students will need to be creative. They may have to try multiple times before they can get the experiment down. Through this way, students need to engage in their thinking in a way they are not accustomed to. As a result of this kind of thinking new ideas will come to life.
The best method to learn is to be able to experiment on your own. That’s how life is, you learn how to walk by trying to get and walk, after multiple times you fall down until you are able to run around. Why don’t we learn this way anymore? The reason why teaching science the way where you allow the students to experiment is to help the students learn the way they have always learned. Instead of trying to memorize certain concepts they have to think through what they need to do and learn from trial and error. This gives them more experience as they go from project to project. As they do this they will find this way of learning more enjoyable.
When you enjoy an activity you will try your best. While they see ways to prove myths they find the enjoyment of creating the experiment and proving their thinking to be wrong or correct. This engages the students to keep going, having the desire to find new myths and new ways to prove them. From this, there is a feeling of accomplishment, because they came up with the myth and proved it. The satisfaction is greater because they don’t even realize the things they are learning.
To summarize the reason why I would choose science would be to help students learn and to help prepare them for what they will need to do in the job force. The kind of thinking that will come from them creating their own experiments from proving their curiosities. None of the inventors over the history got to where they are because they memorized formulas, but they were able to reach them because they pursued their curiosities. As a teacher, I would be able to see them implement the principles and see their curiosities go crazy by finding new things.
