Not Just my Chemistry Teacher by Josephine - May 2024 Scholarship Essay
I THINK ALL GOOD CHEMISTRY JOKES ARGON
“Do you like my meme of the day?” Mrs. Sprague laughs. The room sounds like crickets, except for me. I’m laughing like a hyena or at least chuckling under my breath.
Mrs. Sprague is my Junior year Chemistry teacher. For the past year, I’ve known her, and she has been the most ambitious and outgoing teacher I have ever had. She goes out of her way frequently to make the forty minutes spent with her the greatest forty minutes of your day. This is especially important for a 7:30 am class. I have seen Mrs. Sprague smile daily through sickness and health, while never failing to put a smile on other people’s faces. She is not just what I view as a teacher, she is more than that, she is a leader and an inspiration.
Growing up, I didn’t see my peers as leaders. I thought leaders were supposed to be that adult who bosses you around or that kid who leads the line to lunch, not someone who acts as your equal. But that’s just it. You’re supposed to see a leader as someone you can trust and feel comfortable with. A leader is an individual who desires to help others to become exceptional human beings in the classroom, workplace, or even outdoor activities. They help set you up for the future, not mold you into a dissimilar person. Through it all, I see a leader as a friend.
Junior year wouldn’t have been the same without my friend, Mrs. Sprague. She is the person I want to imitate when I become a leader for others. It’s hard to define Mrs. Sprague's impact on my high school career, but I believe she will always be someone I will have engraved in my heart as the most caring, warm-hearted leader who has ever approached my life. Her great humor and positive attitude will always continue to inspire more great leaders and environments in her classroom. Everyone deserves to have a leader in their life.
Mrs. Sprague fits my definition of a leader.
