A Fair Chance by Joseph - April 2015 Scholarship Essay

Joe Slovak

Many people would probably say the purpose of education is to provide people with the tools necessary to get a career and make a having living. While all of this is true, our educations starts much before these thoughts even enter our heads. Education is an opportunity, it is something that we all have access to, but it is designed to give everyone a fair chance at success. With the world being the competitive place it is, everyone is looking for that edge to separate them which would eventually lead to better opportunities. Education is that edge people are always searching for; it is something that we all have access to, but not everyone takes advantage of.

From the time we are born, our education begins. We start to learn how to walk and talk, and eventually right and wrong. When the time comes to start school, we are all on the same level. Everyone gets to go to school and receive this fair chance that education is giving you. As school goes on, some students start to take advantage of the opportunities education gives you. They take hard classes and challenge themselves, where as some kids just coast and take the easy classes, if any classes at all. The kids taking advantage of school, and suck all the knowledge they can out of their classes are already a step ahead in life. During high school is where kids usually make the decision to both educate themselves and take advantage of the chance they are given, or to ignore it. If someone ignores the opportunity then in the future they will be behind.

One of my really good friends realized the importance of education, and graduated from high school and received almost a full academic scholarship to his favorite school. It shows the example of someone who took advantage of chance that everyone has, and he made the best out of it. I have another good friend who upon high school graduation went to school for plumbing. He now has a full time job working for a company, making good money. This is an example of someone who went out of his way and embraced the opportunity to educate himself in a way not many people do. It shows that there are many forms of education that can lead to being successful.

It is a goal mostly everyone has to have a career that makes them happy, and eventually having enough money to start a family. This is very hard to accomplish without education. Education teaches us certain skills that we need in order to survive in the real world. From learning how to read, how to drive a car, or how to be a CEO of a company, it all requires education. In my opinion it is possible for people to achieve whatever it is they put their minds to because as humans we are all equal. We all have the same opportunities but it is our job to hunt for the best ones that suit us and make the best out of it.

In my opinion, having a good education is the most useful skill to have in today’s world. Education is something that we all have the opportunity at, the difference that some people use it more effectively than others. There is a type of education out there for everybody that can lead you towards your goal. We are all given a fair chance at it, but it is the people that master it that are going to be the most successful into todays every changing society.
