Once Upon A Time There Was Literature by Joseph - August 2016 Scholarship Essay

High school is one of the best times in the learning track. It is the time where students start to be aware of their potential, their weaknesses, their passion, and their future. It is the time where students learn a wide variety of things, from life lessons to academic lessons. Speaking of academic lessons, the subject that taught me the most was literature and here is why:
It is very true that mathematics is a necessary subject to help manipulate the land for mankind’s progression, however the reading a good novel helps me understand the reality of a particular time frame. While physics helps me understand the law of nature in a given time frame, a good poem helps me understand the emotion and reaction of the people in that particular time frame. While physiology helps me understand how the human body works under pressure, in cold and hot environments, letters from soldiers to their mothers, wives, and children help me understand their mindset, their motivation, are the reasons why they are holding on to what and who they are. While science helps build mankind's future, literature helps look into the past to make sure that the future is not a repeat of our past outcomes.
It is safe to say that back in high school, while my friends were resolving complex equations to find a solution for mankind’s problems, I was learning how to understand the individual’s mindset and feelings. Literature gave me the tools to communicate with my classmates, to understand their reality, and to have an opinion that is based on more than a report card. In addition, literature gave me the knowledge necessary to face and understand other cultures when it was time to further my education in the United States.
