Numbers to Live By by Joseph - August 2016 Scholarship Essay

Nearly everywhere I go, I find myself in situations that require previously accumulated knowledge from my high school classes. These instances vary among several subjects, including reading and writing, social studies, and even a touch of Spanish here and there as well. But by far the most valuable school subject that has impacted my life and has helped me grow in many aspects of my academic pursuits is mathematics.

Math is used everywhere in almost any situation imaginable. From things as simple as cashing a check, to way more demanding departments such as engineering and architecture, math principles are key factors in humanity’s functions. Simple ideas such as adding and subtracting, are just as useful as more difficult concepts such as trigonometry and calculus. Sure enough, such math lessons have been highly valuable to me personally as I go throughout my business every day. Besides the obvious high-level math courses that require developed knowledge, I also use my math skills to help with cooking, time management, shopping, and even in video games.

As beneficial as math classes have been to me now, such an advantageous subject will come in handy as I pursue a future career as a mechanical engineer. My high school level classes will help me be able to withstand and comprehend the more challenging college courses that I take during my post-secondary education. Eventually, if it's the Lord's will, I will achieve a position in the mechanical engineering field. This major will obviously require immense amounts of math knowledge and capability, and the roots of such understanding sprout from my easier, yet ever-so-critical high school classes.

So in reality, the simplicity of adding and subtracting are really the numbers that myself, and millions of others alike, live by each and every day, whether in school, work, or at home and abroad. Without question, I learned the most from my math subjects in high school more than any other subject. They helped me grow and mature mentally not only as a student, but also as an individual with big dreams and goals for his future.
