Where I'll be in 10 years by Joselynn - March 2025 Scholarship Essay
In ten years, I see myself living on my own and working as an elementary school teacher. To achieve this dream, I will be continuing my education until I earn a master’s degree. This will be a major shift from living with my mother and relying on her financial support to becoming independent and earning my own income. But I believe in myself—I’ve come too far in life to quit now. I’ve seen how hard my mother has worked so that I can be successful.
The first step toward my goal is earning my master’s degree, which means spending six years in college. Teaching has been my passion for as long as I can remember because I love helping others especially children. Education is the key to making my dream a reality. You can’t become a teacher without the proper degrees, but college is expensive, and I can’t afford it on my own.
I live with my amazing single mother and my adorable dog, Zeus. They are the best family I could ask for. However, my mother is the only one working in our household, and her income isn’t enough to support my college education. Even if she tried, it would be impossible. While I would love to work to help her financially, she wants me to focus on my studies instead and believes that since I haven’t had to work in high school that has afforded me the opportunity to solely focus on my education allowing me to earn such good grades Receiving this scholarship would ease the financial burden and allow me to pursue my education minimizing the worrying for both my mother and myself. I am a first generation college student and I really would like to be a good example to all of my family members that are younger than me. I want them to know that although our parents and grandparents didn’t graduate, it is a possibility for us.
I want to share the kind of teacher I will be. My classroom will be a welcoming, fun, and safe space where students feel comfortable and valued. Ever since I was young, I have loved working with kids, and I am passionate about becoming an elementary school teacher. Growing up in the public school system, I experienced both great teachers and not-so-great ones. I want to be the kind of teacher who ensures every student understands the lessons and isn’t afraid to ask for help. If a student struggles, I will go the extra mile to break it down in a way that makes sense to them without making them feel ashamed for needed additional support and clarification for concepts not understood initially.
Most importantly, I will make sure all my students feel equal, no matter what challenges they face. As someone with dyslexia, I know what it’s like to feel different from my peers. That experience has shaped me into someone who is determined to create an inclusive classroom where every child feels capable and supported.
This scholarship would bring me one step closer to achieving my dream of becoming a teacher—someone who makes a real difference in the lives of students, just as I always wished for when I was in their shoes. I know that I’ve made a difference in the lives of those around me and I would like to be a light in the lives of those I have yet to meet.
