My True Classroom by Joselyne - September 2018 Scholarship Essay
“The world is a classroom-life is the teacher and the subjects are learned every day from the success, failures, changes, twists, turns, surprises and contradictions- some brought about through choices and other preordained by destiny.” – Eugenie Laverne Mitchell
I am currently a Freshman student enrolled at the University of Texas at Arlington. The accomplishments I’ve achieved so far, such as being the first in the family to go to college and finishing high school, have made me very confidence in achieving even greater success in the future.
In 25 years, I envision myself working around the world and helping those in need such as shelter, health, and food. The way I see myself learning in those future years is not by sitting in a classroom but learning from the world that we live in and from myself, through experience.
Traveling through various locations will open my mind to the endless traditions that I will experience. For example, I strive to be a successful family nurse to travel to places such as Haiti. As one of the poorest countries in the world, Haiti is one of the most in need of health professions. With a long history of internal political instability, a prime location for natural disasters, especially hurricanes and earthquakes, a high population density lacking public health provision, and a lack of local industry, Haiti has not been kind to their people. I would want to be a good humanitarian and do my best part in this world and help and learn through them. I would learn their hardships and what they face on a day to day basis. I would try to learn how they have survived for so long and with so little. The learning I would gain from these experiences wouldn’t be something anyone can learn with basic school subjects but with the doors wide open and the world staring back at you.
Furthermore, I would continue to learn more about life and who I am as a person. In 25 years, I should be reaching the point where I am decided on what kind of human being I want to be. I will have decided what kind of role model I want to be for my kids, or for my friends. Learning doesn’t necessarily need to be gaining information and knowing new materials, learning can also be growth and maturity and prosperity.
