From Leadership Camp to Philanthropic Pursuits: My Journey to Business Administration by Joselyn - February 2024 Scholarship Essay

My decision to pursue a degree in Business Administration stems from a culmination of personal experiences that have shaped my aspirations and values. One pivotal experience was my participation in a leadership camp at Newport RI's naval station, where I gained profound insights into the essence of leadership and the importance of effective communication and teamwork.
As I stepped off the bus onto the unfamiliar terrain of the naval station, I was greeted by the thunderous commands of a platoon sergeant, setting the tone for the rigorous trials that awaited me and my fellow cadets. Throughout the week-long journey, I assumed leadership responsibilities, ensuring the cohesion and well-being of my squadmates. From organizing morning routines to navigating challenging obstacle courses, I learned first hand the significance of strategic planning, adaptability, and resilience in achieving common goals.
Moreover, surviving on MREs during the camp taught me the value of maintaining a positive attitude in adverse circumstances—a lesson that resonates deeply with the unpredictability of the business world. Despite initial reluctance, I embraced the challenge, inspiring others to follow suit and fostering a sense of camaraderie amidst hardship.
Reflecting on my upbringing in Lynn, MA, a community grappling with poverty, I have witnessed the transformative impact of non-profit organizations like My Brother's Table and LaVida. These experiences have instilled in me a profound sense of gratitude and a commitment to giving back to my community. By pursuing a degree in Business Administration at Babson College, I aim to leverage my education and skills to effect positive change and uplift underserved communities.
Furthermore, my degree in business administration will not only broaden my knowledge base but also equip me with the strategic mindset and professional networks needed to navigate the complexities of the philanthropic sector. By leveraging these resources, I aspire to establish and lead non-profit organizations dedicated to addressing pressing social issues and empowering individuals from marginalized backgrounds.
In essence, my personal experiences at leadership camp and witnessing the transformative impact of non-profit organizations in my community have shaped my decision to pursue a degree in Business Administration. Through my education at Babson College, I am confident that I will be equipped with the necessary knowledge, skills, and networks to turn my philanthropic aspirations into a reality and make a meaningful impact on the world.
