Changes in Education, for the future decade. by Joselyn - July 2022 Scholarship Essay

The changes that I hope to see in education in the upcoming decade are that the cost of college is regulated to give people from all walks of life the chance to pursue a higher education in order to get a career in which you may need a degree such as an engineer or a job in the medical field. I hope education becomes more well funded to give students in a low income area the same education as students in a middle class area or a higher income area.

Education is essential for people to have and it’s unfair that someone's financial situation can limit or affect the standard of the education they will receive. All students should be given the option to a fair and equal education. In the past there have been many court cases that fought to give students an equal education regardless of their race, religion, gender, nationality or any other factor of someone's life. These court cases were fought with the premise of situations people deemed were violating the “Equal Educational Opportunities Act of 1974”.

Some examples over the years have been Lau v. Nichols. A case in 1974 that started due to the failure of San Francisco’s school system to provide accommodations to the Chinese speaking students who could not speak English. A case similar but in Texas, was Castañeda v. Pickard, where a father of two Mexican American Children, Mr. Castañeda declared that his two children were facing discrimination by the Raymondville Independent School District due to their race and ethnicity. These are only two cases but there are more such as Plyler v. Doe, Toll v. Moreno and others that did not reach mainstream knowledge.

I believe education needs to become a universal right for all people to be given the opportunity to learn and advance their education to a degree level. So many people around the world want to better their education but are restricted by their financial status. Education should be affordable for people of all walks of life.
