Overcoming an Unexpected Challenge and Continue to Pursue My Goal of Becoming an Astrophysicist. by Jordan - February 2024 Scholarship Essay

After leaving the hospital, I thought about everything the doctors told me. They were all encouraging and advising me not to allow this setback to hinder my decision to pursue my dream. As I keep this in mind, I thought about following my dream of becoming an astrophysicist. As someone who has also shown interest in the galaxy, I would love to work for NASA and increase the number of minorities in this field. There are currently only 26 African American women astrophysicists in the U.S. As a person who loves science, I believe this number should be higher and I would love to be an advocate to increase this number.
As I researched institutions to continue my studies, there was only one university I have
in mind. That institution is the one and only the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill.
I strongly believe that this prestigious university is the best option for me. As a Chapel Hill
resident, I have embraced the culture and values promoted throughout our community. As
our community continues to grow, I will continue to be a pillar to my community.
Through my education, new experiences, and continuous effort, I believe that I will devote my career as a NASA scientist to develop theories on how nebulas and galaxies intertwine with life within our universe. As I continue my education at UNC-Chapel Hill, I will be able to formulate these theories within the institution research department and with the assist of personnel at the Morehead Planetarium.
