What is your biggest goal for this school year? Why? by Jordan - September 2020 Scholarship Essay

Since entering high school, I have always known the importance of good grades and extra-curricular activities in getting into college. I have worked hard in my classes, and I have enjoyed playing in the concert and marching bands. I truly enjoyed the sportsmanship and camaraderie of playing varsity sports.

My continuing strive towards academic excellence, I would say, is a given. I need good grades to get into college, especially to get into the BS to MD medical program. However, there is an intangible that I have learned over the years, and that is being a servant-leader. Some leadership positions have been formal, but most have been informal, like being asked to oversee the junior members on the track team or being asked by the band director to work with new marching band members on various tasks. I have received my school’s leadership and character award four times.

I take great pleasure in working with people and serving as a de facto mentor or buddy. I take pride in being asked by teachers or coaches to assist my peers because it reflects the trust they have in me. My biggest goal for this year is to continue to be a servant-leader because I get to help others, which brings me great joy. That is the legacy I want to leave when I graduate.
