Skill is Greater Than Money by Jordan - February 2020 Scholarship Essay

If I were to start a non-profit organization it would be to fund young athletes who cannot afford the money aspect of sports although they have the drive, skill, and dedication.
In the United States, athletes that want to play competition sports, strive to play college, or want to pursue a career in a sport have to fork out an astronomical amount of money just for the chance to play, with no guarantees. To become a specialized athlete in a sport, the athlete must participate in a competition league, on a competition team. Each team costing thousands of dollars of years that is not including travel fees for any tournaments or competitions away from home. This alone cuts down the amount of athletes by half because they cannot afford the cost. For the select athletes that make it onto competition teams and are able to pay the required fees and want to play in college things just get tougher. Although, selection is more difficult through college because each school wants the best, the limited access of getting coaches eyes on an athlete lowers their chances dramatically. Just to be seen my a college coach an athlete must travel to identification camps ran by the college, which is more money, or have to travel to college showcases, again more cost just for the chance to make a lasting impact and be selected to play for a college. In addition, those strong-willed athletes who want to go professional or represent their country not only have to make a life altering sacrifice but also more money. There are many academy programs which are used to bring in young talent but the athlete must now live at the academy house, do as the academy says, go through training, and is a load of money to take this option. As each academy strives to find the best talent they look to competition teams even though comp teams eliminated half of the talented athletes that could more talented than those selected because they could not afford the money aspect. After offering positions in the academy many competition players have to say no because they are barely making ends meet with the cost of competition. This results in going to second and third best.
Overall, the way the United States sports system is set up they are eliminating talented athletes because the costs are too high. Higher and more competitive the level of play goes the more money it costs. My non-profit organization would be helping to raise awareness of the problem that the United States' athletic department has and to help raise funds for those athletes with big aspirations that they could surpass if they were not held back by money. We want to help these athletes excel and make a difference in the sports world.
