The Procrastinator by Jonathan - September 2022 Scholarship Essay

When I was 5, I was diagnosed with a learning disability. At a young age, I did not understand why I had to go to tutors and reading programs. During the summer before first grade, I attended intense therapy for one hour each morning before going to summer camp. Extremely frustrated from the fun summers my friends were having, I found it to be very difficult to work while they swam, played Xbox, and cast their lines for fish. The therapy continued for a grueling twelve weeks. It was not fun. Motivated by star charts and prizes, I pushed through it. Treatment continued in different forms for a number of years.
I would advise my younger self to not procrastinate the therapy lessons. I missed out on a lot of the fun stuff in my younger years, which could have been avoided if I stuck to the work. Unfortunately, I found myself attending the programs for 15 years of my life. If I would have persevered through the challenges and adversity I faced, then I would have finished much earlier in my life. Thus, I might have more memorable moments from my childhood rather than sitting in a room with a tutor. But, I regret nothing because the journey is more fun than the destination.
After years, of intense remediation, I am living proof that the brain can change. My resilience and perseverance changed the trajectory of my life. I was accepted into a highly selective high school, Saint Louis University High School, The University of Indiana-Bloomington Kelley School of Business, and achieved what others might not have predicted. Thank you for considering me for the Varsity Tutors Scholarship.
