Jonathan Cooper's Varsity Tutors Essay Submission by Jonathan - November 2016 Scholarship Essay

The college experience I will be most thankful for is the knowledge I will be receiving from the two-year associates degree in advanced welding sciences. I plan on attending Columbia Basin College in Pasco, WA for their highly praised welding program. At CBC, the welding professor/instructor, Chris Mitchel, has been a welding inspector for many years and has also taught at CBC for over thirty years. Chris is one of the best welding instructors in the state of Washington and highly accredited on the national level as well. Chris has taught many students that have participated in the Washington State Skills USA welding competition and have gone to state with the same skills acquired at CBC.
When I attend CBC in the Fall of 2017, I am going to strive to be one of the best students Chris has taught. My passion for welding runs deep into my core. Every Wednesday, I attend the welding program that is held after school at Pullman High School and stay long after everyone has left. I am currently striving to be the at the top of my welding class at Pullman High School, so I can be able to qualify for State Finals then possibly Nationals. Achieving a state title at the Skills USA contest will push me to strive for a state title at the Skills USA contest while attending CBC. The knowledge that I am currently receiving at Pullman High School will help me excel past the freshmen at CBC when I attend in the Fall quarter of 2017. I will be very thankful for the knowledge I receive at CBC as it will carry over to my career in welding upon graduation from college.
I am going to be actively searching for a welding job while attending CBC. I am planning on studying to receive a minimum of three certifications in different welding processes. With three certifications, I will be able to work in almost any welding/fabrication shop in the nation. The three most common welding certifications are with the Arc welding process, the Tig welding process, and the Mig welding process. Arc welding is also known as stick and SMAW. Arc welding is used for high strength welding on industrial sized buildings and structures. Tig welding is also known as precision welding, aluminum, and GTAW. Tig welding is used for aluminum structures and can also be used to fabricate special structures and frames for light weight use. Mig welding is also known as wire feed and GMAW. Mig welding is used for fabricating large structures and frames in a short amount of time. Mig is one of the most common in fabrication shops because it is one of the cheapest and easiest processes of all of the welding processes.
