Succeed in my academics by Jonathan - July 2016 Scholarship Essay
Over the course of my collegiate career I have had the pleasure of having numerous teachers that have been nothing been inspiring to me. With those professors, I have learned numerous life lessons, goals, advice, and more significantly lessons that allowed me to become the greatest version of myself. The single most imperative lesson that I have been taught by a professor was to always succeed in my academics. In particular, my professor, Richard Harper, often told me to better myself and continue on with my education. He had asked me one day what was my future career entailed. I responded by telling him that I wanted to become a lawyer. After telling him this he has done everything he can to watch me succeed.
The lesson of succeeding in my academics has been present in several different ways. One of the most important ways that he has helped me succeed was, if I missed a quiz that was due online, he made sure to open it up for me because he knew that I was working incredibly hard to obtain the grades I wanted. While working 25-30 hours a week as a manager at my job, and paying for my education by myself, my professor knew that it was difficult to do both, so he helped me. After telling him that I wanted to go to law school he wanted to help me out as much as possible. One of the guest speakers that was going to be speaking to the class was a judge, he told me that I really should ask him several questions pertaining to the law. So when he came in, I took advantage of the opportunity and presented the speaker with numerous questions that he was very informative about. Another instance that my professor helped me out, was by writing a letter of recommendation for my law school admission process. I had asked Richard Harper, specifically because I knew that he was a professor that cared about me and my future endeavors. By doing this he knew that he was not wasting his time, but more so believing in myself and my future education. Another particular instance that this professor has helped me out was by letting me register for another one of his classes even though it was full. At the beginning of the summer time I had emailed this professor about requesting to be in his class. He took time out of his busy schedule to meet me up with me to sign these papers so that I can get into his class for the upcoming fall semester. When we had met up, he also gave me some words of wisdom that could help me out in the future. He also asked me how the process of the law school admission was going and I responded that it was going well. He said that one thing I needed to do was to get a internship and get a letter of recommendation from a judge. In order for this to happen he said that he would try and get an internship available for me so that I can gain the experience and increase my chances of getting into law school.
All of these particular instances were some of the few things that my professor Richard Harper has done to help teach me what it means to succeed in my academics. Without this particular professor, I don’t know what I would have done without him. If it wasn’t for him and his words of wisdom or lessons he has bestowed upon me, I don’t think I would have been able to push myself and further my academics.
