We're All In This Together by Jonathan - April 2016 Scholarship Essay

Transitioning from secondary to post-secondary school presented itself to be rather challenging in one respect. I completed a majority of my electives in high school and began my second semester of college taking twelve to fifteen credit classes per semester, all of which were within my major. Inundated with upwards to twenty-five pages of reading per class, I found myself wondering how I could possibly digest this plethora of new material while simultaneously creating study guides for quizzes and exams.
During my final semesters on campus, I thought to try and divide the work amongst my peers and myself, in order to capitalize upon our already limited studying time. In any given class, a group of three or four classmates would essentially read only specific chapters within an assigned book and then provide a summary of their respective chapters’ key concepts, terms, etc. Using a simple printer scanner, we would all share our notes and reap the benefit of a comprehensive and in-depth study guide while only doing about a quarter of the work, as compared to most of our fellow peers.
If I could give younger students one piece of advice it would be this: Everyone is on the same boat, so lend a helping hand to your fellow classmates and you will all increase your chances of passing your class with a favorable grade. Do not hesitate to make friends. In the long run, classmates will be your largest asset in helping to relive the stress of an otherwise chaotically organized college classroom.
