A lesson to breathe by Jonathan - April 2016 Scholarship Essay
Learn to breathe.
If life were a video game, then school is the most powerfully built boss you are destined to meet. School is the boss that does more than challenge an individual; school tests a persons’ stamina, endurance, and intelligence on levels that most are not able to comprehend, wearing out most students. An average school student’s response to the loathsome question of “How’s school?” or “How are things going?” results in a groan or a rant or an absolute break down because the weight being carried is just too overwhelming. Everyday students follow their daily routine of waking up early to receive their education, however there is always more to it than meets the eye. Students may follow personal tragedies, obstacles that seem so extreme, or maybe just nothing. Nothing at all may stand in their way, but that is still no guarantee for success, and truthfully, no one is guaranteed success. No one is assured security in the future and this may be the most frightening factor that instills fear and stress into students.
As a high school senior, obstacles have come in varying shapes and forms. From overwhelming optimism, to profuse pessimism, from soaring success, to fulsome failures, from abundant achievement, to bountiful blunders, its no question that stress has proved to be a recurring mood, if not, the general mood. The many lessons and slabs of information school has taught me are merely minuscule to what I carry on today. The lesson that should be treasured and remembered at all times; learn to breathe. Throughout years of schooling, students are placed under exams whilst carrying tremendous pressure about the future under the mindset that what they accomplish in high school can determine their whole life. That in itself is a paralyzing thought, only evident to be unfavorable to all. The pressure may be so rigorous that individuals crash and burn due to collapsing under such a full-scale amount of stress.
My advice is learn to breathe. The stress of school acts as a cloud, dwindling the oxygen as it draws every last bit of air away. The most momentous relief is that profound and intense breath, feeling like an individual has essentially escaped a tragic end. That is what students must strive to obtain, at any time possible. It is what students should hold focus on gaining A long, deep breath so extraordinary that individuals can feel the pounds of pressure being lifted from their shoulders. A breath that can alleviate the anxiety of who they may be in the future or how they may become. Young students need to learn and realize that the conflict that they are confronted with may easily act as a cloud to their mind. A simple clearance can be accomplished through rest and plain breathing. There is no rule saying that we must continuously push ourselves. Students constantly fail to recognize the point where their effort is only to be rendered null due to the fact that they are moving towards a dead end. There is no fault in placing a break in hard effort because chances are, that break will create a higher advantage than a disadvantage. There is nothing wrong with taking a pause and having a breather. Learn to breathe.
