Studying abroad by Johnathan - March 2016 Scholarship Essay
Francis Bacon once said “Travel, in the younger sort, is a part of education; in the elder, a part of experience.” Traveling abroad gives people a new perspective on the world, and a new light. People who have traveled to foreign countries have stated what an experience it was; especially when they saw how people lived outside of the U.S. By requiring students to study abroad, we give them an opportunity to experience history and life; that they could never do in America. That is why students should be required to study abroad because of how it opens them up to new experiences, lets them travel, and lets them see the history.
The great thing about studying abroad is that a student will be able to do and experience new things. If they were to be sent to Europe; they would able to witness how the Europeans live. They would be able to experience the freshness and the difference in culture that they have. If they were sent to Asia; the students would be able to see the different traditions that they have. If they stayed there for any holiday they could see how the Asian cultures celebrate the holiday in their own way.
The best part of a student being able to travel abroad is the fact that they would be traveling. They will be able to explore places that they could not explore in the U.S. If sent to any part of Europe they could visit Paris, Italy, or even Belgium. This would give them the opportunity to expand their minds, and have fun while they learn. This also always the student to get out of their shell; this would give them the opportunity to see the few wonders that are outside the United States.
One of the rarest opportunities about studying abroad is that it lets you have 1st hand glance on history. If a student was taking western civilization 1 in college, and was studying abroad; they would be able to visit the places mentioned in the history books. Even if they are not taking a history class; students would able to gain some knowledge about the local history of wherever country they were in. The students would be able, by traveling learn the countries perspective on the history and what they believe. This will be able to broaden the student’s minds about history, and let them see two sides of the story.
New experiences, travel, and the history are reasons why students should be required to study abroad. There are many that say that it should not be required, but it should. We should be exposing our students to see and experience new things. Even with students who don’t want to; this could be a way for them to break away from their shells. Some students might do better abroad and away from an American environment all together. By studying abroad; students will learn that there is more than the soil they have known, that there are other places that could be explored; that’s why students should be required to study abroad.
