Commitment to Excellence and Empowerment through Physical Therapy by John - January 2024 Scholarship Essay
My name is John Greenwood and I am a senior in high school and a rising freshman at North Park University, I am eager into going to college and majoring in Kinesiology and Physical Therapy, with related Athletic studies.
My fascination and interest in human movement began early, as an athlete on the field during high school. Athletics has always been a significant part of my life. It highlighted the wonders of human body performance and the ways it conversely reacts when injured. This early exposure made me interested in understanding how to help people regain full functionality and deliver optimal performance.
In addition to the way physical therapy directly ties to my love for sports, I am intrigued by its potential role in communities with health disparities, especially those involving African American and Native American populations. As a Black and Native American man, I have a unique perspective on these health challenges. I hope to leverage my education in support of these communities, helping bridge the public health divide with a focus on movement and physical recovery.
Despite academic challenges of balancing athletic commitments and school, I've maintained a high school GPA of 2.99. This attests to the hard work and dedication I bring to not only the field but the classroom as well. I am excited to bring this same dedication to North Park University. The academic rigor I am anticipating will nurture my personal and professional growth. My education will provide the foundation I need to fulfill my journey through life.
In closing, I look forward to the privilege of contributing to the enriched programs of North Park University and furthering my knowledge in kinesiology and physical therapy. I am motivated to use my education and subsequent career to help others live their lives to the fullest regardless of health conditions or racial backgrounds. Your support in this journey will surely propel my goals into tangible realities.
I appreciate the consideration of my application to the Varsity Tutors College Scholarship Contest and the opportunity to potentially better serve my community and those with physical limitations.
Thank you for your time and consideration,
John Greenwood
