Breaking News: Local Teen is a Morning Person? by john - January 2019 Scholarship Essay
As improbable as it seems, I, John wisniewski, a teenage boy who loves to sleep, am most presumably a morning person. I lived in denial for several years, staying up late to finish my homework and watch my favorite tv shows: However, I’ve recently rediscovered my productive morning self - and I credit it to my constant desire for a full night’s rest.
Sleep has always been important for me. In middle school, the constant threat of waking up implausibly early in the morning for a sporting event always left me in shambles. I used to be unbearable when I had to wake up early for a swim meet in a faraway city. Even worse, the transition to middle school marred my mornings even more, forcing me to wake up at six to catch the bus. The cold and dark mornings were just not my forte, and getting ready for school that early just left me with a groggy mind and an indifference to breakfast (a meal which was traditionally one of my favorites). However, now going through my fourth year of highschool, with the ability to take an online class in the morning, I’ve realize that waking up at seven in the morning actually isn't as strenuous or imitating as it used to be. And despite my constant need for sleep, I’ve noticed that if I go to bed at a good time, I tend to naturally wake up around eight, even on the weekend after a particularly strenuous week of school.
My drive to complete tasks is much higher in the morning as well: I’m filled with all the energy I could need to complete my daily chores (of folding the laundry and feeding my dog). And despite living in our basement, where it is generally quite a few degrees cooler, I am never opposed to waking up - even if I’m waking up to go take a big standardized test (a fact I discovered recently, having had to wake up several times to go take these tests for college applications). I’ve found that if given the opportunity to complete a task earlier in the morning as opposed to later at night I will often choose the former.
There's something about the fresh and crisp morning air that just makes me more productive; knowing I get to see the beautiful and generally pastel sunrise on my way to school seems to motivate me exceptionally well. I also credit my increased drive to my (usually) full night of sleep. Waking up to get a task done is much easier than completing the task at night, when I am completely out of energy. I’ve also noticed that alloting myself legions of time in the morning to complete my daily routine makes the whole monotonous ordeal much more enjoyable. Full of energy and already in the right mood, I find myself completing a majority of my homework and other tasks early in the morning. Additionally, my desire to finish tasks early in order to not worry about them for the remainder of the day plays an important role in motivating me early in the morning.
With my (albeit limited) additional life experience I have grown to love mornings; my childhood resentment has turned into enjoyment, relaxation, and motivation. And while my definition of “morning” may be slightly skewed, one thing is for sure: as much as I may dislike it, I am a morning person.
