Educational Artificial Intelligence by John - February 2018 Scholarship Essay
The year is 2038. The mass production of fully autonomous vehicles have rendered driver’s licences useless. Advances in agricultural techniques have solved world hunger. Cancer has been cured. Classrooms are fully outfitted with every type of technology possible, ranging from desks capable of taking attendance to whiteboards with auto-correct. However, it is not the bright, flashy lights that would be integral. Instead, it would be a technology that runs more so in the background. That’s right, it’s educational artificial intelligence.
Artificial intelligence has created a huge buzz since the creation of Google with names such as Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk plowing its path through their investments in the technology. It’s ability to fit into just about every aspect of life shows just how versatile and helpful it truly can be. While some use it in the form of Siri, some may have adopted artificial intelligence in the form of modern self driving cars. Now, imagine this technology implemented in the classroom.
Students will have a virtual assistant given to them at an early age of with whom they grow, learn, and interact. Operating on artificial intelligence, the assistant would understand the child’s strengths and weaknesses and would report to the teacher, eliminating the need for tests or quizzes. This revolutionary idea would phase out standardized tests, as all students would be measured without bias, resulting in decreased stressed levels.
Although it can be argued that implementing artificial intelligence in the classroom can do more harm than benefit, it is clear that its use in the classroom will have more than just one purpose. Despite no one knowing what the future may hold, it is clear that artificial intelligence will be an integral part of education in 2038.
