Discipline by Joel - July 2016 Scholarship Essay
The single most important thing I've learned from a teacher is that the world meets no one half way, that if you want something in life you go out and grab it and don't let anyone stop you from achieving whatever you want to achieve. At first, this was a hard concept to grasp for me because though I was a bright and sophisticated kid all through school I had a tendency to get unproductive.
It was my senior year in high school and I met a teacher named Mr. D, he was the textbook definition of an alpha male and a philosophical genius. I enjoyed the walk I took every Friday, after class was over to hear him lay down some wisdom, one day while Mr. D and I were talking we got on the subject of bodybuilding and lifting weight, at the time I had struggled to lose weight because though I spend lots of time in the gym, I struggled with the nutrition part and so we were talking and he agreed to help me cut my weight down if I promised not to quit on him.
And then the cut started, it wasn’t hard at first, there were days when I was eating very little and still had to gym and do cardio. I would hear him in the back of my head say “the world meets no one half way”. Every time it got tough and I felt like I was going to crumble under the pressure I would here that quote and feel like I could do anything and slowly I got through the weeks until 3 months later I had dropped 40 pounds all because I refused to quit.
This quote will always stay with me till I grow old and my son takes my place. This quote can be used for every aspect of your life not just physical fitness, whenever you feel like the weight on your back is too much and you feel like dropping it all, you have to remember why you started.
