I think when talking about social emotional skills, it has sparked my curiosity and passion for learning. I say this because Social Emotional Skills create a barrier to college student success by fluctuating the way college students abilities to self-regulate, persevere through challenges, and empathize with others. Some of these barriers include poverty, discipline practices, personal trauma, and anxiety. Social emotional skills are essential for connecting with others and can be taught.
To start, social emotional skills are the process of developing the self-awareness, self-control, and interpersonal skills that are vital for school, work, and life success. Robert Wood Johnson Foundation describes social emotional skills as,¨a frame-work that focuses on the core social and emotional skills necessary for students of all ages to be healthy and successful¨(4). During early years of life our brains are rapidly growing and so is the social emotional skill capacity to learn essential emotional and social skills. Social and emotional skills need to develop to,¨Experience, regulate and express a range of emotions. Develop close satisfying relationships with other children and adults. Actively explore their environment and learn.¨(Jennifer Palmer 1). Emotions are linked to and influence cognitive skills. Developing close satisfying relationships with others enhances comprehension and retention by enabling prior knowledge, making connections, and coming up with new ideas. Actively exploring your environment increases student focus and attention. It also encourages higher levels of student performance. This is because the sense of community allows students to be connected with each other and be more engage and collaborative. This fluctuates with college student success because students struggle with post-high school coursework,¨often due to a lack of the social and emotional skills needed to thrive in a higher education setting(SDF 1). According to Jane Nam, 75.7% of first year college students returned to college the following year. This means academic readiness is important, missing out on social emotional skills contribute to a lack of preparedness for college and future career paths.
