Humility in Leaders by Jocelyn - December 2021 Scholarship Essay

Barack Obama, Jose Mujica, Mahatma Gandhi are known for their humility within their leadership. Obama went and served to the homeless when he could have been at home having a meal with his family. He put those who serve in front of his own enjoyment. Jose Majica donated 90 percent of his presidential earnings to the poor instead of lavishing it for himself. Mahatma Gandhi is known for living in poverty willingly when he could have had all the praise and riches he wanted. Being a leader and being an example to others requires you to be humble with your ways.
A leader is someone who sees where there is room for improvement. They look for the cracks in the foundation that are keeping the team from success. Putting themselves after all of the other problems and conflicts. Anyone has the ability to be a leader as long as they put forth the work and effort. Being the first to charge into battle, risking yourself for others, is what it takes. The head of the team has to think of what is better for everyone else, than what is better for themselves. It is just like when a boss needs to decide on giving everyone a bonus. Instead of thinking of saving more money within the company, they should think of the families behind the check. By doing this they are liked by their team and people will care about becoming accomplished with it.
A leader requires many different pieces to do it well. They have to be responsible and encouraging, and ethical, but most importantly they have to be humble. Being a captain, a boss, a CEO all require being humble to the majority. In the words of Mahatma Gandhi, “One must become as humble as the dust before he can discover the truth.”
