Change the World by Jocelyn - October 2016 Scholarship Essay

Why is language such an important role in our society? Why would one person say something is ethically correct, and another say it is completely wrong? How come language can make us feel certain emotions? What are emotions?
In a typical classroom a teacher probably doesn’t ask these questions to his/her students. I have the privilege of being in the International Baccalaureate Program in which I am able to take the class Theory of Knowledge. I am so intrigued by this class that if I had to switch my student role for a teacher one, this would be the class I would teach. Not only does it make you think about deep topics, but it also combines all the other classes such as: mathematics, english, science, and history.
Theory of Knowledge(TOK) would be an amazing course to teach, especially in the world we live in today. It guides the student to have an open mind about people’s experiences and opinions on different types of subjects, like our use of language. Each and every class can have an impact on the student, but I believe that this class does more than that. It is able to relate modern day issues going on in our society. A student would not have to ask, “why do we learn this if i’m never going to use it in my life?” TOK provides an open minded environment that I would enjoy working in to provide my students with the understanding that there is not a right or wrong answer to some of the questions we ask ourselves.
Being able to teach a student the criteria needed to pass an exam is extraordinary, but being able to teach a student how to impact the world is stupendous, that is why I would teach the course Theory of Knowledge. I could possibly spark a flame in one of my students, that perhaps would then become a fire that would change the world.
