The Beginning of a New Cycle by Joban - January 2018 Scholarship Essay
The one word that best describes why I want to attend college is "innovator". At a young age, the word had not meant as much as it means to me now. Whether inventing a new idea or concept, or in my case being a first-generation student. Being an innovator is a way for me to express myself; it also motivates me to inspire those around me. Growing up with few resources while being a first generation student has encouraged me to develop strong persistence and willingness to strive for a better life. As an innovator, I am committing my life to becoming the turning point in my family. While it is hard to look back at my family’s struggles, I am filled with aspirations to stay focused and motivated. Changing my family’s history and using my parents’ sacrifices for determination has helped me learned that the challenges a person faces should not discourage them, but help them achieve and work hard.
My ultimate goal has always been to become a neurologist; however, there is foundation behind my chosen profession. I want my siblings to understand that they will be able to do whatever they want as long as they work hard. By going to college and accomplishing my goals, the idea of what was once a dream will become a reality for me and my family. I have grown older to broaden my understanding of college. I realized that my desire to attend a university came from my yearning to become an innovator. Although my parents never went to college and my family does not come from a long list of innovative and eminent careers, I want to prove to my siblings that our ability to succeed should be well within our potential. Much of what I do now is to help build their confidence. My parents cared for us and gave us what they could. I put it upon myself to encourage me and my siblings and to flourish into innovators and game changers. I have neglected to continue the cycle that has held my family back in many circumstances. The opportunity to attend college is not only a privilege, but it is also a way for me to inspire and tell my story of how I am able to overcome the obstacles that many people are afraid to battle.
Additionally, my close relation to the word “innovator” creates aspirations and confidence in my abilities. It is eye-opening to see how far I have made it when many odds were against me. I chose the word “innovator” because I am creating a new perception of the people that I care about. While going to college is an indication of my hard work, it is also a symbol that represents my parents' efforts of raising a young man with a promising future.
