What do you plan on majoring in when you get to college and why did you choose that major? by Joanna - April 2025 Scholarship Essay
When I think about my future in college, I’m excited to say that I plan on majoring in nursing. This isn’t just a career choice for me; it comes from a genuine passion for helping others and a connection to the field that’s been shaped by my experiences and my family.
My journey toward nursing kicked off during a summer I spent volunteering at a local hospital. I got to interact with patients and help out the healthcare staff, and honestly, it felt amazing to be there for people when they needed it the most. Seeing patients smile and showing their gratitude was such a rewarding experience. It felt like I was healing something inside myself by bringing a little joy and comfort to others. Those moments opened my eyes to the impact that compassionate care can have, and I knew I wanted to be part of that healing process.
Another big influence in my decision is my mom, who has been a nurse for over 20 years. Growing up, I watched her work incredibly hard, especially during the tough times of the COVID-19 pandemic. She was on the frontlines, putting in endless hours to care for her patients. It was inspiring to see her dedication, but it was also heartbreaking to witness how much it affected her when she lost patients. From her experiences, I learned how important empathy and compassion are, and her ability to treat her patients like family encouraged me to step into this field. I want to carry on that legacy of care and make a difference in people’s lives.
Nursing is more than just a job for me; it's a calling. I genuinely believe that everyone deserves to feel cared for, especially during tough times. The chance to advocate for patients, provide support, and contribute to their healing journey aligns perfectly with my values and dreams. I’m eager to learn more about healthcare, develop my skills, and ultimately make a positive impact on the lives of others.
In summary, my choice to major in nursing is driven by my desire to help people and my admiration for the nursing profession, inspired by my mom and my own experiences. I’m committed to becoming a nurse who not only provides excellent medical care but also brings comfort and compassion to those I serve. I can’t wait for the journey ahead and the opportunity to make a difference through nursing.
