Keeping My Sanity: Waking Up On My Time by Joanna - November 2016 Scholarship Essay
“Wake up!” my mom urgently said to me for the past thirteen years, followed by her gently pushing me to wake up. After telling her, “I'm awake” she would then turn on my television to the PBS channel for the show ‘Dragon Tales’. My favorite show made the mornings a little bearable, but even then my mom had to drag me out of bed. She was my alarm clock each and every morning, every weekday since the first day of Kindergarten. Each time I was awakened, I legitimately thought I would have a mini heart attack. Thankfully, I didn’t have one. The morning was just not my friend. I constantly had to wake up at 6 o’clock to get to school before 8:40 a.m. which often left me in a daze during my first and second period classes. By the time lunch rolled around, I thought I was going to lose my sanity. As soon as I graduated high school and entered college, I found out that I was able to pick college classes in the afternoon and evenings. That was when my whole world flipped upside down.
Who would have thought that when I was born I decided to pop out of my mother in the early morning, 6:30 a.m. to be exact. Yet, I have always been more of a night owl and stay up until 3 to 4 a.m. on weekends. I don’t mean to brag, but my personal best is 7:30 a.m. on a Monday, but that was because I was still doing homework for a class. I didn’t get a single hour of sleep, but I made it through school and passed out as soon as I touched my bed. Talk about a walking zombie. I didn’t even drink a single ounce of coffee. Nowadays, I don’t have to think about waking up so early. In college, I am able to pick classes that fit my schedule. When it comes time to pick my classes for the quarter, I make sure to choose either afternoon or evening classes, which suits me just fine. I am also able to keep my sanity, which is also good. That is why I am most thankful for the afternoon and evening classes that are offered at my college. Without them, I don’t know where I would be.
