The medical influences by Joachim - October 2019 Scholarship Essay
I wasn’t always into the medical field. I used to focus on one thing that one thing was basketball. Dribbling, shooting, dunking, I love it all. However, as the years go by, I start to realize something, it can’t always be about sports. I have to find something that I could back myself up. Luckily, my parents both pursue and work in the medical field. That is what influenced me to pursue a nursing major. Coming from a household who loves basketball, there were times where injuries happen. It is a sport for crying out loud; of course, something would happen. My mom is a nurse, so she would usually come out and help others who unfortunately get hurt in a basketball game. It is amazing how my mom acts so courteous and polite; we need people like my mom to perform that same behavior because I knew for a fact that patients in her work are not always willing to comprehend to what’s best for themselves. That is what influenced me.
My dad just started getting into the medical field and works the material and makes sure that each station in the hospital has the right things needed to proceed with whatever they need to handle. He just recently started doing this, so you can say that my dad and I are trying to head to the same process as our mom. Now that I am in college, it sucks to go so far away from my home. Coming from the city of Sterling located in Virginia, there is not much hope of you making it out of there successful. Occasionally, we would see gang members hanging by the street corners just waiting to cause havoc or people in my age acting as if they were gang members from influences around the environment surrounding us. Therefore, I would not be telling the truth that I have never seen violent crimes at night in the city. All I would want to do is help the victims who get caught up with their mistakes and help care for them like a good Samaritan would like my mother, but it was dangerous. I tried to stay away from the bad parts of my neighborhood. What encouraged me most from staying away from critical areas of the city was my two little brothers. As the oldest brother, most cases would try to act or behave like me, so I know staying away from that dangerous environment was the right move. Now that I am in Rockford, Illinois, my only hope is to wish that my two little brothers learn how to look out for one another.
Continuing with nursing, I choose to nurse as my intended major because I wanted to help out people like my mother. On the other hand, my dad has influenced me to continue my basketball career as well, which I was fortunate to receive an opportunity to keep playing athletically at Rockford University, though I knew that my parents wanted me to stick with my education first. How I plan to advance my academic career is by feeling motivated and proactive every day. What fueled me to stay away from the bad parts of my city was others who doubted me. People say I am too short to play basketball, or my grades were not high enough to pursue that kind of academic course, but I did not let it affect me. All the hate and doubt motivated me to keep my mindset afloat and to focus on every task at hand. In my freshman and sophomore year, my grades were super low. As I started maturing, I was able to pick my GPA up from less than a 2.5 to higher than a 3.0.
In conclusion, you can see that basketball has been a big part of my life. Without it, I would not know where I would be. Not only did it help me find what career I would like to pursue academically, but it has also taught me many life lessons. Being a leader, using hate as motivation, putting others before me, communicating with each other, and so many more qualities that you need in basketball that correlates to the medical field. Yes, it may be a hard task in trying to commit in sports and academics, but with the right attitude, I believe that I will take advantage of every opportunity I receive, never take things for granted, and to seek out others with similar situations to help manage my time and accomplish my goal of becoming an excellent care provider.
