What Leadership means to me? by Jimmy - May 2024 Scholarship Essay

To me, leadership means that you are in charge, however you don't boss anyone around, and you don't yell or scream at anyone. A great leader will lead by example. Don't ask or tell someone to do something, that you wouldn't do yourself. Also do what you say you will do. If you tell someone that you will be at work at 7 a.m, then be there at 7 a.m or a little before. My current supervisor is a perfect example of a true leader. No matter how bad a situation is, he is right there beside his employees, doing exactly what he says he would do. He gets to work on time, he is never late, he never calls in unless it is a life or death emergency. If you need someone to talk to about a problem, his phone is always on. Whether its work related or your best friend has passed away, whether its 2 p.m or 2 a.m, he is going to answer his phone, and he is going to listen, and give you feedback. Whether its something that you want to hear or not.
A true leader will always be proactive, and be kind and compassionate when needed. And also be stern when a problem arises. They won't be someone who talks about you behind your back, and act like your best friend to your face. And this is exactly the type of leader that my supervisor is. I am extremely lucky to have such an amazing supervisor leading our department.
