Worst Subject Ever by Jillian - August 2016 Scholarship Essay
Math. I hate math. With a passion. Would I, by any means, say it was my favorite subject? Never.
But I will say one thing about math. Math is one of the only classes that really pushed me as a student.
I knew from early on in my school career, that math would be a struggle for me. I dreaded going to math class, doing the homework, and most of all taking the tests. But now being a senior, I will say looking back, math is one of the only classes that have really challenged me, and made me use my brain to its full potential.
While maybe I didn't really understand all the lessons in my math class, I learned the most from it. I learned that not all things will come easy for everyone. I learned that there will always be someone smarter than you, or better than you at something. But that shouldn't discourage you. You might not be the best at something, but you should still work hard to be the best you can be for yourself. Don't compete against others, compete against yourself. Try and break your highest grade, or finish something quicker than the last time.
While I did not learn a ton from math academically, I learned something about myself as a student. This in turn, made me grow as a student. I took what I learned from struggling in math, and applied it to different classes and different aspects of my life. Such as, other hard classes, hardships in my personal life, and my hobbies in the arts and acting.
So, while this may not be a conventional answer, and it was not my favorite subject, I learned that you can grow the most from things you hate the most.
