Instructions for the Impressionable by Jewel - March 2019 Scholarship Essay

Being a high school orientation ambassador and a Clemson University Orientation Ambassador, I have the opportunity to give tours to several students of all grades and years. Of course, entering the first year of high school or college is always nerve-wracking and scary. But being in my position, my job consists of making feel the freshmen and other incoming students feel as comfortable as possible, as well as encouraging them to come to our school and make the right decisions doing so.
One piece of advice I would give the impressionable freshman classes I tour would be to surround themselves with people they want to be, and not people they can be. To do so, you have to surround yourself with people who have worked hard to get to where they are, or faculty who are willing to help students learn positions in higher jobs, or even just friends who don’t give up and work hard in their classes.
People tend to copy what they see, so if you see someone doing great, earning money, getting good grades, and taking care of themselves, you will want to do the same. If people surround themselves with people who are lazy, people who give mediocre performances in class and work, and people who do the bare minimum, they will feel comfortable with doing the same, because they know they can make those types of weak efforts. Once you surround yourself with people with positive energy and success, you will want to strive to be like them.
College is more than just earning a degree and getting a job after college. It’s about networking with students and staff, figuring out who you are, as well figuring out exactly what you want to do in life that makes you feel successful. Networking is a big factor in job decisions for your future. You have to continue to meet new faces and make new friends to get to where you want to be. Therefore, when you place yourself in the position of having to meet people who have superior jobs, outstanding grades, and exemplary workmanship, you will become an embodiment of who you interact with.
