My Journey to Civil Engineering and Beyond by Jessica - March 2025 Scholarship Essay

Ten years from now, I see myself not just as a licensed Civil Engineer but as a trailblazer in my field, turning blueprints into reality and leaving a lasting impact on the world around me. Whether it's designing sustainable bridges, enhancing transportation systems, or reshaping urban landscapes, my goal is to create infrastructure that improves lives and strengthens communities. I also envision stepping into a leadership role, merging my Civil Engineering expertise with my business knowledge to guide engineering teams and oversee project planning and budgets. More than anything, I dream of pushing the boundaries of what's possible. I true dream would be to work for NASA on groundbreaking projects that excel space exploration forward and inspire the next generation of innovators. This vision drives me every day, and I am committed to making it a reality.
I am incredibly grateful to my 10th grade STEM teacher, whose recognition of my potential and passion for problem-solving inspired me to pursue Civil Engineering in college. This encouragement ignited my desire to make a meaningful impact through engineering. My college education at the University of Central Florida will be the foundation of this journey. Earning a Civil Engineering degree will equip me with the technical expertise and critical thinking skills necessary to tackle complex design and construction challenges. Additionally, pursuing a minor in Business will strengthen my leadership, communication, and project management abilities, providing me with a well-rounded approach to both the technical and strategic aspects of engineering.
As a female pursuing a career in a traditionally male-dominated field, I recognize the importance of breaking barriers and paving the way for future generations of women in STEM. It’s not just about designing structures or planning projects; it’s about inspiring change and showing young girls that they, too, can excel in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. I want to be a role model who proves that hard work, determination, and passion can overcome any societal expectations or gender biases.
Beyond academics, my involvement in student leadership, volunteer work, and internships will strengthen my teamwork, adaptability, and leadership. These are qualities essential for any successful engineer. Serving as the Vice President of my class and managing social media, newsletters, and fundraisers has taught me how to communicate effectively, organize complex projects, and lead with confidence. My work with a Youth Summer Camp program has further honed my ability to plan team-building events and manage group dynamics.
Furthermore, my experience as a National Honor Society tutor has given me the opportunity to mentor younger students, reinforcing the importance of giving back and supporting others on their educational paths. I hope to carry this spirit of mentorship into my future career by encouraging and guiding aspiring female engineers.
In 10 years, I will not only be a skilled Civil Engineer but also a leader and advocate for women in STEM. Whether I am working on critical infrastructure projects or contributing to NASA’s innovative missions, my education will have provided me with the technical expertise, leadership abilities, and unwavering confidence needed to succeed.
