From Observer to Advocate: Shaping My Own Path by Jessica - March 2024 Scholarship Essay

In a moment as ordinary as any other, within the confines of a school project, a single conversation with my project partner ignited a journey of self-discovery and advocacy I never anticipated. A journey that altered not only my academic life but my professional and personal life as well.
While working on a school project, my partner and I were discussing our upcoming class schedules for the next semester. I mentioned my requirement to take an Analytics Experience class for the MBA program, which seemed unnecessary given my near completion of the Data Analytics program. Despite my proficiency in coding and data analytics, my advisor insisted the class was a non-negotiable part of my MBA graduation requirements.
My partner had a story that resonated deeply with me. He had faced a similar situation but had chosen to fight back instead of merely accepting it. “I wouldn’t take no for an answer,” he said, sharing how he managed to not take the class. He even stated, “That’s where we’re different. You’re too nice and accepting.” Initially, I dismissed the thought, believing there wasn’t much I could do. However, my partner’s words lingered, encouraging me not to settle but to challenge the decision. So, I took a leap and spoke directly to the program director asking why this class was required for someone with my background. To my surprise, I found out the class wasn’t even required for someone with my expertise in data analytics, and that the program was in the process of updating its requirements. This discovery kicked off a whirlwind of meetings, discussions, and emails, as I navigated conversations with department heads, my advisor, and offices for financial aid and registrar. All this was in an effort to adjust my schedule and opt out of the Analytics Experience class after the official deadline. It was a daunting process, and there were moments when I almost gave up, but my partner’s words, “Don't give up,” kept playing in my head, fueling my determination.
Ultimately, my persistence paid off. Although it was too late to drop the class in the usual manner, I was allowed to work on a data analytics project independently as a substitute for the class, which aligned more closely with my academic and career aspirations. This entire journey, sparked by a casual conversation, profoundly taught me the value of fighting for what I believe is right for me. It highlighted the importance of speaking up, asking questions, and advocating for oneself - skills that proved invaluable not just academically, but also in my personal and professional life. For instance, when I missed a job application deadline due to a misunderstanding, I didn't resign myself to defeat. Instead, I reached out to the employer, explained my situation, and expressed my passion for the role. And as a result, they reopened the application process for me, giving me an opportunity that previously seemed lost. An opportunity that would have been lost if I had just accepted the loss and not emailed the employer.
Through my journey, I discovered the immense power of my voice—not as an instrument of complaint, but as a tool for advocating my needs and driving change. This transition from observer to advocate, ignited by a seemingly simple conversation, taught me the critical importance of not passively accepting "no" when it concerns my passions, success, or direction in life. This journey not only transformed my perspective but also solidified my resolve to actively seek out what I know to be right for me.
Armed with this knowledge and newfound confidence, I move forward, understanding that my voice is not just a whisper in the wind but a force capable of enacting change. This journey has not only reshaped my approach to obstacles but also instilled in me a profound belief in my ability to shape my own destiny. Whether it's securing a previously missed job opportunity or navigating future challenges yet unseen, I am now equipped with the resilience and self-advocacy skills needed to overcome life's challenges, opening doors to opportunities previously unimaginable.
