To the Bahamas by Jessica - August 2023 Scholarship Essay
As of now, my biggest accomplishment in my education is presenting my research at the Gerace Research Centre in the Bahamas. During my freshman year of undergrad at Elmira College, I began to do research with the environmental science professor. After working together for about four or five months, we flew to San Salvador island to attend an interdisciplinary conference on the geology, natural history, and anthropology of the Bahamas. I mark this as my biggest accomplishment to date based on time constraint factors, education level, and contribution to my own education.
The research I presented was an erosion vulnerability index for San Salvador (not to be confused with El Salvador) based on methodology created by my advisor who developed an erosion and deposition vulnerability index for the entirety of the tropics. Much of my accomplishment I credit to him, while all of my accomplishment he credits to me. Who is right could be based on discretion. I believe that a good mentor will make or break your experiences, whether that be for school, work, or just life.
After presenting my work I came back home to the states and continued to develop my research on my own. I improved my resolution, precision, and I found that after attending the conference, my understanding of my own work had increased. When I go back to school in the fall, I will get to show the work I did over the summer with personal pride based on independence.
I started this essay with ‘as of now,’ because I fully intend to continue furthering my education and pursuing each opportunity that I am presented with.
