The Entertaining but Serious Approach of Animal Farm by Jessica - February 2015 Scholarship Essay

The book that every high school student should read has to be "Animal Farm" by George Orwell. It is such an amazing book because it doesn't make you feel like your'e reading a history book. It his hilarious in some parts and very sad in others. This book will give you a lot of emotions and you will love it.

I remember in my sophomore year of high school, we were required to read everything related to the Second World War and communism. At the end of the year, we were preparing ourselves to the topic of propaganda, and we were assigned to read the famous book written by George Orwell. We were to read the book first and then understand the meaning later. When my whole class was done reading, we thought it was a silly story of some greedy pigs wanting to better their lives at the farm, but only making it worse for their friends.

It was a very fun book to read, even when you don't understand the meaning behind it. Later our teacher gave us a brief lesson in history about the Soviet Union. I was confused in what the had to do with the books and so were my classmates. As we learned about the pigs representing Joseph Stalin and Leon Trotsky, we were amazed that such things had occurred in history. I fell in love with the book. Although very similar to the actual events, I will always remember the history of communism in the way Orwell put it in Animal Farm.
