Man, Myth, Legend, Herbert Hoover by Jessica - October 2017 Scholarship Essay

In the year 1928, a legend was elected as the President of the United States of America. In the following year, the round-faced man was inaugurated into office. This man is none other than Herbert Hoover, well-known for being the president in charge during the stock market crash of 1929. If given the opportunity to dine with and talk to any president, it would be him. I would implore him for his thoughts on holding office during the start of the Great Depression, and stories of his childhood.
On October 29th, 1929, the U.S. stock market had a major crash, which helped contribute to the Great Depression. As the sitting president at the time, Hoover made a plan which involved the government leaving people and businesses alone. He believed that, over time, the Depression would resolve itself. Unfortunately, many people, both back then and now, thought he was doing nothing but leaving the American people to suffer. If possible, I would ask him why he believed this method would solve the problem, and why he thought FDR's hands-on "New Deal" policy would not. I would also ask him what he thought and felt when the market crashed. Perhaps meeting with Hoover and discovering his thoughts on the matter would show people today that he was not ignoring his people and their issues, but rather doing everything he could to resolve them. Also, this would help people understand that the Great Depression wasn't the fault of Hoover, but of many factors that contributed to it. Hopefully, this would change his legacy as "The President Responsible for the Great Depression."
Hoover was born on August 10th, 1874, in the state of Iowa. Few people know that he had an interesting and unique childhood. At the age of two, he contracted a respiratory infection known as the croup, and was believed to have died.
