Endless Forms Most Beautiful by Jessica - August 2017 Scholarship Essay

Zoology is defined as the study of organisms classified under Kingdom Animalia. The requirements that an organism must meet to be classified under Animalia, as an animal, are that the organism must be multicellular, eukaryotic, and heterotrophic. As multicellular organisms, animals are complex machines that require many diversified pieces to run. As eukaryotes, animals are evolved, sophisticated creatures that have surpassed the (relative) simplicity that life once was. As heterotrophs, animals are competitive beings that are driven to better themselves or die out, forcing them to, over time, become perfected.

If I was given the opportunity to teach any course as a college professor, I would indulge in teaching zoology. Life is a random consequence of a cruel and uncaring universe shifting about without regard to life. If life is not taken advantage of in most of Kingdom Animalia, the genetics that create an individual, living, breathing creature will die out, and it will be forgotten to time. In a wide majority of Kingdom Animalia, this drive to not be forgotten is enough to keep the individual distracted and in constant search of something. It can pass away with peace once it has achieved its goal, instinctually knowing it has succeeded, even if it is not conscious of its success. However, some creatures need more than to fulfill this desire. It may fill some with existential dread to know that the ultimate goal of man is not to breed and continue their lineage, but to others, it may bring great comfort.
As a professor of zoology, I would not only teach emerging minds about the wonders of the endless forms most beautiful that inhabit this planet, but I would hope to serve as a guide toward the goal that man is meant to reach. I am of the belief that it is one of many possible goals of man to preserve the beauties of this world. The destruction that seems to follow men – from deforestation to exploitation – there is a bleak future ahead for many of the co-inhabiting creatures we have on this planet. If I, as a professor of zoology, were to convince even half of my students that life beyond humanity is worth saving, maybe the future wouldn’t be so bleak. If I, as a professor of zoology, were to show even one student toward their destiny as a lover of nature and save them the terror of feeling true existential, nihilistic dread, I could potentially inspire someone to go on and become not my genetic successor, but my spiritual successor, and continue my fight.
