Just a Girl with a Dream by Jessica - January 2017 Scholarship Essay

Ever since I was in first grade Girl Scouts has been an extracurricular of mine that I cherish. It has given me multiple opportunities that inspire me to make a difference in my community. One of those opportunities happened just recently, in this past year, as it inspired me to achieve my Gold Award. I was finally eligible to earn the award because I had just bridged to a Senior Girl Scout.
I went through an extensive process that involved creating, developing, and carrying out a service project that contributed to changing my community. Throughout my eleven years as a Girl Scout, I constantly heard about the Gold Award. Earning the award became a goal of mine because it gave me the opportunity not only to positively influence the people affected by the service project, but I would also be able to positively influence the other girls around me to do the same thing.
Once I was eligible, I started coming up with ideas right away. This stage of the process was a struggle for me because I wanted to do something that I was passionate about, but also have it be something that would help change my community for the better. I finally came up with my project, one titled "Artful Future."
For this project I built a team, sketched a design, gathered donations, and painted a mural. With the help of my team, I painted this mural on one of the playground walls at my local homeless shelter. The mural encompasses three different-sized, pastel-colored hot air balloons over an green gradient grassy field. In between the entrancing sky and sloping hills of the mural, there is a cursive quote "The sky is the limit."
I chose this mural for my project because I was able to positively influence all of the children at the shelter who may not have as many opportunities as others do. The mural serves as inspiration to the children to positively influence them by letting them know that if they set their minds to it, they can achieve anything.
