Stranger Danger! by Jessica - July 2016 Scholarship Essay

Hundreds of children each year are abducted. Each unassuming child is most likely lured by the stranger to a car after the stranger has established some arena of trust with the child. Many parents warn their children that talking to strangers is dangerous.
Personally, I learned about the danger of strangers from a book my mother gave to me. It was called Never Talk to Strangers. It was because of this book and all of the scary scenarios I read about that caused me to be aware of strangers. Before I read the book, I was too trusting and always talking to people I did not know. I remember being pulled by my arm by my mother away from the potential kidnapper.
Today, I am still aware of strangers and the potential danger they can possess. At my place of work, there are several shady characters that come in. Some are homeless, but some just give me the “heeby jeebies”. Nevertheless, I find myself calling the security guard over when they hover around the store for too long.
The valuable lesson of “never talking to strangers” has been much appreciated by myself. The judgment I learned from reading the book my mother gave me is still used in my daily interactions with people. Remember, “stranger danger”!
