Seniors vs Civics by Jessica - June 2016 Scholarship Essay
The beginning of senior year, I entered my Civics class and expected to just waltz through the class without any effort. However, my assumptions were quickly diminished as I soon realized that although the class was fun, it was not to be taken lightly. I made sure to hand in each of my assignments and put in as much effort as possible to get the grade. This tactic worked for a while, but I somehow got the idea in my head that if I did well on my homework assignments, that I would automatically ace each and every test. Because of this, I decided that I did not need to study or that a quick review of the chapter ten minutes before the test would ensure my high scores. Yet again, my assumptions were wrong. I quickly saw my test scores declining and my overall grade started to decrease as well. Rather than becoming upset and pushing myself to do better, I kept telling myself that the material was not in the textbook and it was not my fault. However, when I would go back and look over my test once I got it back with constantly declining test scores, I saw that each question on the test was mentioned somewhere in the chapter.
After a while, I decided enough was enough and I started to properly study and focus on my Civics work just as we entered into the hardest unit of the year. Each student struggled with this unit and each chapter became increasingly more difficult. For a while, it seemed like the material was going in one ear and out the other. This meant, that studying and being proactive was crucial for the remainder of the unit. Whenever a test was coming up, I would study ahead of time and study for forty-five minutes to drill the information into my brain. Because of this, I saw my test scores increase and my overall grade increase as well. In this way, I was able to push through the hardest unit of the year with flying colors and able to end the year with the highest grade I have had all year long.
