The Importance of Attending College by Jessenia Hernandez by Jessenia - April 2020 Scholarship Essay

Attending college is important because it helps one gain more experiences and it brightens one's future through academics and a new sense of independence. College by dictionary definition is an educational institution or establishment, in particular one providing higher education or specialized professional or vocational training. It is more than that. College is more than a classroom, more than a degree. It is an opportunity.
Through college, as mentioned before, you can gain more independence. Students can be away from home for the first time, and this will be their first taste of that independence. Meeting new people, having roommates, new responsibilities, and even gaining new skills are all part of the college package. Professors may also give work for students to do outside of class, which is very likely. The workload for college varies depending on the major the student wants to pursue. According to Brittany Read, senior Legal Communications major at Howard University, her schoolwork is heavy and requires more study time. However, with her successful time management skills, her workload has become manageable over time. Time management is a skill one must learn to become more independent. Additionally, college is an opportunity for someone to find themselves.
College has a wide span of opportunities to explore. Through clubs, sports, and the new environment you can find yourself. You will be creating new friendships and relationships that could be life long while indulging in the rich experiences of college. One of these opportunities is networking. Networking can be through clubs, volunteering, sororities and fraternities, and other organizations. Networking allows you to become connected with a professional in your field or with students who are also going into similar fields. It also gives way for you to become knowledgeable about your field. In college, you are gaining new skills that can help enhance your current career path. According to Associate Vice President of Product Marketing of Southern New Hampshire University, Susan Bogle, workers with a college degree are less likely to face unemployment. With a college degree, one becomes more valuable to a company. Earning the degree in which you are majoring in demonstrates your determination towards your career development. Another benefit of college is that you are more likely to experience job satisfaction in the future.
College provides higher education for millions of people. Not everyone has the opportunity of attending college, so everyone should take this opportunity with a sense of thankfulness that one can grow with attending college. Whether it be an online college, a private college, or a public college, everyone deserves to be exposed to the advantage of having a higher education.
Overall, attending college is important to me because it will help advance my career path and aid in creating the best possible version of myself. It will also help me become more connected with my environment and will be the place I create my lifelong friendships. My success through attending college will pave the way for the rest of my life.
